Frequently Asked Questions

At First Car Rental we pride ourselves of being transparent in our prices and also do our best to offer the best deals to our customers. Whenever you are looking to rent a car in Malta, always go through the reviews available on websites such as those of Rentalcars.com and HolidayAutos.com. These two websites give you a wider perspective as they tend to have both positive and negative comments of customers that used the brands service. It is of utmost importance to look into the package deal that is being offered in order not to be surprised at the time of rental with additional costs. If you choose not to rent a car from First Car Rental, we always recommend brands with a good reputation as there is too much at stake to act unprofessional. Always check the insurance package and the waiver fees so you do not end up paying huge amounts when you arrive at the counter desk.

The daily rate will vary according to the vehicle you would be interested in, the duration and the period. During Winter and shoulder months rates tend to be low whilst during the summer and peak season months the rates tend to increase due to high demand. For this reason, it is always recommended to book in advance as it is very difficult to find a last minute deal during this period.

It is very easy to find the Car Rental Offices at the Malta Airport. These are located in a new building adjacent to the departures terminal. The building is called Park East. Once in this building you would need to go to the first floor to find the car rental offices and car park. The First Car Rental office is the first office that you will find when walking out of the Lift and make your way to the common area. You will find all the major international brands in this build such as autoUnion, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.

In order to be able to hire a car in Malta, you only need a valid driving license and a credit card or debit card. In the event that the driving license you have is in a foreign language and does not have an English translation, you would be required to provide a translation in English. Furthermore, you must have a minimum age of 21 years and must have held the driving license for a minimum of 2 years.

Normally people tend to go for smallest vehicles in view of the size of the island. This would be a Peugeot 108 or similar to a Ford Fiesta or similar. These small vehicles help customers manoeuvre in the narrow streets as well as when finding a parking.

Driving in Malta is always on the left hand side of the road. When it comes to parking in locations like Valletta, Sliema and St. Julians we would recommend to park in a car park as most of the parking in the street would either be timed parking or reserved for residents. Although we have a lot of cars in Malta, driving is not challenging and you will get used to it in no time. One may also encounter some traffic in congested areas or during rush hours. Speeding is in Km/hr so whenever you see a speed camera with a speeding sign make sure that you slow down accordingly.
